August 2018- National Celebration of Stitch Day

After several weeks of liaising and planning with Jennifer, the librarian at Savick Library, and the committee, the day for celebrating stitch arrived.
Jennifer met us with enthusiasm, interest and excitement as we set up a small exhibition of our work and began to get ready for our heart making workshop.  Patrolling the floor Jennifer not only directed our visitors to the worktables but became a temporary furniture mover as more chairs were needed!

Soon we were on our way explaining the task and helping many non stitchers get started making their felt hearts. Luckily the committee had already produced several examples to show a variety of techniques and stitches that could be used.

Throughout the morning everyone was treated to tea, coffee, juice and biscuits which helped to keep the energy levels high. The library was buzzing.

Our display of work was admired by everyone and Jennifer’s husband was on hand to help things run smoothly. Being a library we had several of our ‘Travelling Books’ on display and these were very much admired.
There was a great deal of nattering, laughter as well as stitching being completed. Throughout the morning we had the ‘Knit and Natter’ group, some of the local WI, ‘Friends of the Library’, a grandad and grandson, three generations – grandma, mum and daughters, as well as many children with their parents and other adults.

We not only advertised the Embroiderers’ Guild and our branch which many visitors enquired about. We also encouraged them to come along and find out more at our September meeting and it was also a very good time to advertise the WW1 100 hearts exhibitions, especially the one at Liverpool Cathedral in September (see Forthcoming Events tab for further details) where several members have hearts going on display.

The morning was a great success and one which the members who volunteered to stitch also enjoyed immensely.

Thanks to everyone involved; the staff at the library, especially Jennifer and Michael who manned the library desk whilst the workshop was going on, the visitors who made our day and the Embroiderers’ Guild members.

“Can we book you in for next year?” was Jennifer’s last comment when everything had been packed away.
