Even the treacherous weather couldn’t dampen the mood as the annual Christmas party got under way. There were plenty of games organised by Irene and Ann, which caused lots of laughter as well as taxing those brain cells. The raffle was organised by Kath Howarth with Christmas Fayre prizes, mainly wine and biscuits, to win
The morning finished with a game of Pass the Parcel before we sat down to an excellent three course Christmas dinner. Coffee and mince pies followed.
The annual Christmas competition was to make a Christmas cracker. There were 12 entries showing a wide variety of embroidery techniques from beading, trapunto, hand and machine embroidery and appliqué to name just a few.
The winner, voted by the members, was Mel Charters for her lovely silver machine embroidered cracker. Well done Mel.

The afternoon talk – “My Journey from A-Z and back again” was given by Pat Barratt. We had met Pat previously when she led the needle weaving day school. What an interesting life Pat has led beginning with her first journey to Aden ( A) as a child because her father had been posted there by the RAF and finishing with Zanzibar(Z).

After training as a teacher her posts had taken her all over the world sometimes with friends but many alone. She has worked in many countries as a teacher in a variety of different roles. She has travelled to Morocco, Turkey, Iran, Germany and The Bahamas, through South America, the Soviet Union, the Middle East and into Africa but always came home to England, finally having a base in Rochdale where she eventually managed to buy her house.

The countries she has visited all came with a tale to tell. Her funny anecdotes certainly made for a very interesting afternoon.

As she talked Pat showed us many of the souvenirs she has collected. A collection of textiles, pictures, jewellery and decorated gourds. What a delight. Thanks to Pat for a very enjoyable talk.

Too soon the party came to an end but I am sure the day had helped to get everyone ready for the festive season.
