December 2017 - Christmas Party                                         Lecture - Gawthorpe Hall Textiles Collection

We began to set up the room for our Christmas party, tables were set up with bowls of chocolates and party games on, and before long, the room began to look very festive and warm.

On arrival members were able to take a Christmas name badge (kindly made by Rosie), and settle down for an eventful day.  When everyone had arrived and had a tea or a coffee, the notices were given and then the party began.

There were lots of different word games on the tables for us to complete throughout the course of the morning, whilst we tried to guess what was in the 'feely' bags made by Sandie, pinned the bobble on Santa's hat and complete a Christmas quiz provided by Liz.  Ann kindly organised an alphabet game, whereby we had to think of several sewing related items for each letter of the alphabet that Ann shouted out.  There were lots of prizes to be won along the way.

As lunchtime drew near, we held our final game of 'ring the bell', where numbers were called out and the last person to still have a number not called, would win a prize.  This year our prize was to be a vintage book on embroidery entitled 'Encyclopaedia of Needlework by TH. De Dillmont' which was kindly donated by Joan.  The prize was won by Beryl - well done Beryl.
We all took our seats for our Christmas meal, being offered wine and soft drinks whilst waiting for the meal, and everyone enjoyed spending time together catching up with friends.  Once again, Irene had kindly made the centre pieces for the table, with flowers and leaves from her garden - they looked really lovely.

Towards the end of the meal, our 'Secret Santa's' were distributed, and then it was time for a tea or coffee and the raffle.  Kath had kindly made a raffle bag and the committee members filled it with sewing related items for the top prize.

This year's competition was to embroider a Christmas card, and throughout the day we had been voting for the card we liked best.
Before we left our tables, the votes for the best embroidered Christmas card were counted, here are the entries:
The Sullivan Trophy was won by Mel for her beautiful card, which can be seen as she collects her prize.  Well Done Mel.

As the day went on, it was time to prepare for our afternoon speaker and the tables were put away in readiness for the arrival of Rachel from Gawthorpe Hall.

Rachel began to tell us all about a lady called Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth who was the founder of Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, on how and why she went about collecting some of the key items in the collection.

We were shown some beautiful photographs of some of the pieces from the collection, which can be seen below.

Another piece that was mentioned was an Early 18th century double sided colifichet embroidery showing St Aloysius of Gonzala, brought by Rachel in Italy around 1910, that she fell in love with.

Our day had come to an end, and we had all thoroughly enjoyed the talk and the photographs provided by Rachel.

Merry Christmas everyone.
C.P.
