September Workshop - Love of Vintage by Pam Whittaker

12/9/2015

Saturday the 5th September, our first meeting of the new programme and St. Andrew’s was filled with a buzz of excitement, as members greeted one another and prepared for the day.

We began with an introduction from Pam, who inspired us with her beautiful memory rolls and books, using vintage fabrics and exquisite lace, perfect pearl buckles, tiny buttons, handkerchiefs folded to make pockets and much more.
Pam showed us how to construct items, to show off the vintage materials with their embroidered edges and decorations, to their best advantage.

Pam had generously brought a variety of materials, which she invited us to use.

We learnt how to print maps and photographs onto fabric using Bubble Jet and that lace folded and stitched to make a clutch bag, could be painted with Lumiere paint to stiffen it, achieving a modern twist.

Before long we were ready to start and the ideas began to flow.

Photographs, dried petals trapped in silk, precious remnants and family heirlooms suddenly appeared. Even those fabrics showing signs of wear, could be cleverly reused to create a new memento.

A lovely atmosphere of calm descended, as we cut, arranged, layered and stitched our selected cloth and lace.

What a range of outcomes we achieved! There were  books, bags, wrapped fabric rolls with pockets for family photographs, central squares for a memory quilt, a pyjama case, a dainty purse to name but a few.

The day concluded with a range of very individual items: fabric, lace, buttons, buckles and pearls with stories to tell all now recycled to create a new story, thanks to Pam’s help and inspiration.

What a lovely way to begin our programme!
Thanks to Dee for writing the blog this month.
Sylvia and Barbara manned the shop whilst other ladies stitched throughout the day in the back room.
